Inviting Youth and Families to Mental Health Event at Utah State Capitol

Utah Hosts Inaugural Children’s Mental Health Advocacy Event

In recognition of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month, the Utah School Mental Health Collaborative and Mending Minds Village are hosting their inaugural Children’s Mental Health Advocacy Event at the Utah State Capitol on May 6. Dr. Aaron Fischer, co-director of the Utah School Mental Health Collaborative, emphasized the importance of community connection, stating, “This event aims to shed light on an issue that affects everyone across the state."

The statistics are stark: 1 in 5 Utah children faces a mental health disorder yearly, while suicide remains the leading cause of death for those aged 10 to 17. “We need to do something about this," Fischer added, expressing excitement for the event’s potential impact.

Starting at 9 a.m. with breakfast, the gathering will feature student speakers, over ten community partners, and remarks from state leaders, including Utah’s First Lady Abby Cox. Importantly, attendees will have the chance to meet with state legislators, fostering engagement in the legislative process.

Fischer hopes this event sets the stage for a yearly tradition that amplifies awareness and access to mental health resources. Families are encouraged to RSVP and join this critical conversation.
