Utes Fall to Cougars in Extra Innings Thriller
PROVO, Utah – In a gripping contest at Gail Miller Field, the University of Utah softball team faced a heartbreaking extra-innings defeat against the BYU Cougars, losing 14-13 in Big 12 Conference action on Thursday night.
Despite a stellar performance from Hailee White, who launched two home runs and recorded a career-high five RBIs, the Utes fell to a 12-32 overall record and 4-12 in conference play.
The game was an offensive showcase from the outset, with Emily Capobianco setting the tone for Utah with a two-run double in the first inning. BYU quickly responded, scoring three times to take the early lead. Both teams exchanged runs in the second inning, but the Utes ignited a rally in the fifth. A pinch-hit two-run double from Kendall Lundberg, along with White’s first homer of the night, propelled Utah to an 8-5 advantage.
However, BYU fought back, narrowing the gap to 8-7 before Utah added an insurance run. Shonty Passi then extended the Utes’ lead to 12-7 with a powerful three-run homer in the sixth. Unfortunately for Utah, the Cougars tied the game with a four-run seventh inning and capped it off with a decisive run in the eighth.
White’s performance saw her matching the top single-game RBI record for Utah this season, alongside Jolie Mayfield’s five RBIs against Arizona earlier in March.
The Utes and Cougars will face off again Friday at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the remainder of the season can be purchased through the Utah ticket office or the university’s website.
