The Policy Project, a small nonprofit, has taken on the task of creating a statewide policy in Utah to address student hunger in the upcoming 2025 legislative session. Despite lower poverty rates in Utah compared to other states, 1 in 6 children still face hunger. Representative Tyler Clancy has been instrumental in championing the cause, drawing on his experience as a police officer to highlight the hidden issue of child hunger in communities.
Utah House Bill 100 Food Security Amendments, sponsored by Rep. Clancy, aims to provide free lunches to students from working families who do not qualify for federal assistance programs. This bill not only helps alleviate hunger for 40,000 children but also tackles issues of stigma and food waste in schools. While HB100 is a significant step in the right direction, it does not address all aspects of hunger in the state.
The passing of HB100 would be a vital support for vulnerable children in Utah, ensuring they have access to consistent food and the opportunity to thrive in their education. The Policy Project and Rep. Clancy are grateful for the Utah Legislature’s recognition of this important issue and their commitment to supporting the state’s children.
