Utah Jazz Scholarship Program Transforms Lives of Utah Students
In 2021, shortly after acquiring the Utah Jazz, new owners Ryan and Ashley Smith launched the Utah Jazz Scholarship Program, aiming to support underrepresented high school students in Utah. The initiative has awarded 114 full-ride scholarships over three years, covering tuition, fees, and housing, while also offering mentorship and internship opportunities.
Testimonies from scholarship recipients like Keilani Ngatuvai highlight the program’s impact. Ngatuvai, now a double major at Southern Utah University, expressed gratitude for the life-changing support, which allowed her to focus on her education without financial burdens.
The program champions financial need and inclusivity, with 87% of scholars being first-generation college students. SEG Foundation President Mike Maughan emphasized the Smiths’ commitment to education as a tool for empowerment. The scholarships not only alleviate financial strain but also foster personal growth through mentorship and internships with local businesses.
Success stories abound, such as Daniel Nguyen, a pre-med student involved in community activities, and Tavan Russell, a pre-dental student whose scholarship has motivated him to excel academically. The program exemplifies the power of belief and opportunity, fostering a generation prepared to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
