David Bohmerwald, the owner of Components Cooper Inc., a Raleigh-based electronic resale business, pleaded guilty to attempting to export accelerometer technology with military applications to China without a license. The FBI stated that Bohmerwald faces up to 20 years in prison for his actions.
According to acting U.S. Attorney Daniel Bubar, North Carolina is a major tech hub with cutting-edge technologies that are essential to national security. The FBI revealed that Bohmerwald purchased 100 accelerometers from a U.S.-based electronics company and tried to export them to China. Accelerometers have various applications, including research and development, as well as defense uses.
The FBI emphasized the importance of accelerometers in military applications for structural testing, flight control, and navigation systems. The technology can improve the accuracy of missiles and measure the impact of munitions on structures. Exporting accelerometers to China requires a license, which Bohmerwald did not have.
The U.S.-based electronics company alerted law enforcement of Bohmerwald’s suspicious purchase request, leading to an investigation. When questioned by federal agents, Bohmerwald falsely claimed that the accelerometers were for an end user in Missouri. However, the Missouri company denied having any pending orders with Components Cooper.
The FBI’s announcement serves as a reminder of the risks associated with attempting to export sensitive technologies without proper authorization.
