West Virginia pulls ahead in final moments to defeat Utah – Deseret News

The Utah men’s basketball team fell short in a close game against West Virginia on Tuesday night, losing 71-69 on Senior Night at the Huntsman Center. Despite leading by as many as eight points in the second half, the Utes were outplayed down the stretch by the Mountaineers. West Virginia’s Javon Small scored 18 points and made key plays in the final minutes to secure the win.

Utah’s Gabe Madsen led all scorers with 23 points, but the team struggled with turnovers, committing 16 on the night. The Utes now find themselves in 11th place in the Big 12 standings with one game left to play. Despite the loss, interim coach Josh Eilert praised his team’s effort and fighting spirit amidst the challenges of playing without their fired head coach, Craig Smith.

Looking ahead, the Utes aim to finish the season strong and are set to face BYU in their final game before the Big 12 tournament. While a first-round bye is now out of reach, Utah is determined to compete with resilience and unity in the face of adversity.
