Stew Morrill Inducted into Utah Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025
LOGAN, Utah – Former Utah State basketball coach Stew Morrill has cemented his legacy by being named to the Utah Sports Hall of Fame’s class of 2025. Joining him in this prestigious group are Weber State softball coach Mary Kay Amicone, MLB veterans John Buck and Wally Joyner, and sports broadcaster Holly Rowe. The honorees will be celebrated on September 22, 2025.
Born in Provo, Utah, Morrill’s passion for basketball blossomed early in life. He played collegiately at Ricks College and Gonzaga University, earning All-American honors while securing two All-Big Sky selections. After his playing career, he transitioned to coaching, starting his journey at Montana and Colorado State before returning to Utah in 1998 to lead the Aggies.
During his tenure at Utah State, Morrill achieved remarkable success, guiding the team to eight NCAA tournament appearances and winning the conference title seven times without ever posting a losing record. A three-time WAC Coach of the Year, Morrill retired in 2015 with an impressive career record of 402 wins against 156 losses, making him the second-longest-tenured coach in Utah State history. His .720 overall win percentage slightly surpassed his .718 conference record.
Morrill’s impact on the Aggies was recognized in 2017 when he was inducted into the Utah State Athletics Hall of Fame. His contributions to collegiate basketball have left an indelible mark on the Utah sports community.
