Utah Board Member Sparks Controversy with Unconventional Welcome Message
August 8, 2023 — A routine meeting of the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) took an unexpected turn when board member Christina Boggess delivered a 20-minute sermon that raised eyebrows and ignited outrage. The District 8 Republican used her platform to praise infamous figures like Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, and former Senator Joseph McCarthy, while discussing her views on societal issues and the role of Christianity in public life.
Boggess began by referencing Kaczynski’s manifesto, which she described as "a work of genius" that warns against a "technocratic state" and communism. Her comparison sparked immediate backlash, as she downplayed the Unabomber’s violent actions and suggested there were valuable insights in his writings. “If you don’t know who Ted Kaczynski is, he is the Unabomber. And despite the fact that he did morally reprehensible things, he wrote a manifesto that many called a work of genius,” Boggess stated.
Moving further into controversial territory, Boggess defended Senator McCarthy’s notorious anti-communism stance, claiming that history proved his allegations against perceived communists in government were valid. Her comments, reminiscent of the infamous McCarthy era, elicited shock from fellow board members.
Boggess also intertwined her message with religious sentiments, urging Christians to be bold in their faith and challenge perceived societal corruption driven by “Satan’s influence.” She lamented what she sees as a growing tolerance for untruths in government and stressed the importance of Christians speaking out against what she views as moral decay.
First elected in 2022, Boggess previously ran for the Utah State Senate but lost in the GOP primary. Her remarks have since sparked debates over the appropriateness of such rhetoric in educational governance.
