Vote Save America Targets Utah GOP in Legislative Challenge

In a significant move, the political advocacy group Vote Save America, an initiative of Crooked Media, announced a $20,000 campaign to recruit challengers against ten Republican lawmakers in Utah’s legislature. This effort comes as Utah remains one of the states where over three-quarters of legislators are Republican, a situation that has prompted calls for change.

Shaniqua McClendon, head of Vote Save America, emphasized Utah’s unique demographic—young, rapidly growing, and highly educated—arguing it presents an opportunity for shifting political dynamics. The group aims to target GOP incumbents from districts covering Salt Lake, Utah, and Weber counties in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.

The targeted lawmakers include prominent figures such as Rep. Jill Koford, who won her last election by a narrow margin, and Rep. Matt MacPherson, one of several who has faced Democratic opposition in recent years. Initiatives like this coincide with rising dissatisfaction among voters, particularly centered on certain controversial legislation.

In response, Republican leaders were quick to defend their incumbents. House majority whip Candice Pierucci asserted that Utah’s conservative leadership has facilitated economic prosperity and quality of life, stating that external influences from groups like Vote Save America do not represent Utah values.

Targeted representatives expressed skepticism about the initiative, with some questioning the motivations of outside organizations. Rep. Ken Ivory noted that incumbents welcome competition but criticized the influence of out-of-state funding.

As the election season approaches, Vote Save America is actively recruiting candidates to challenge the GOP-affiliated incumbents in what could become a pivotal moment for Utah’s political landscape. The results may reshape not only local governance but also reflect broader trends in America’s political discourse.
