Sandy Barbour Appointed Interim Athletic Director at Utah State
LOGAN, Utah – Sandy Barbour, the former Athletic Director at Penn State University, has been named Interim Athletic Director at Utah State University. This decision follows the departure of the previous AD, John Hartwell, who left for a position at Troy University.
Barbour, who brings a wealth of experience from her tenure at Penn State and other institutions, expressed enthusiasm about joining Utah State. "I’m excited to assist in driving the athletic program forward during this transitional phase," she stated. Her previous role at Penn State lasted nearly seven years, where she oversaw significant advancements in facilities and a notable rise in the university’s athletic profile, including a celebrated football program.
Known for her strategic vision and commitment to student-athlete success, Barbour has also served in leadership roles at the University of California, Berkeley, and as an athletic administrator at several institutions. Her extensive background in college athletics positions her as a capable steward of Utah State’s programs during this interim period.
The Utah State Athletics program is in a critical phase as it looks to reinforce its competitive edge. Barbour’s appointment is expected to provide stability while the university conducts a search for a permanent successor to Hartwell. Athletic operations will continue smoothly under her guidance, and she aims to ensure that both staff and student-athletes remain focused on their goals.
University President Noelle Cockett expressed confidence in Barbour’s abilities to navigate the challenges ahead. "Her leadership and experience will be invaluable as we look toward the future," Cockett said. The athletics department looks forward to her contributions as it embarks on this new chapter.
Barbour begins her interim role immediately, aiming to maintain momentum and drive success for Aggie athletics.
