Big Sky Conference Welcomes Southern Utah and Utah Tech Universities
FLAGSTAFF – The Big Sky Conference has officially welcomed Southern Utah University (SUU) and Utah Tech University into its ranks, marking a significant expansion in the Intermountain West. This move not only enhances the conference’s competitive landscape but also revives traditional rivalries, notably reintroducing the Grand Canyon Trophy game between SUU and Northern Arizona University (NAU).
NAU President José Luis Cruz Rivera expressed enthusiasm for the addition, emphasizing the geographic and competitive advantages it brings. "The return of Southern Utah University to our regional core enhances rivalries and provides stronger postseason access," Rivera stated.
By joining the Big Sky, SUU strengthens its visibility and athletic profile while benefiting from closer proximity to fellow conference members. Meanwhile, Utah Tech, a growing institution in southern Utah, gains entry into a well-established multi-sport conference. This also ensures automatic postseason qualifications and shared media opportunities, aligning it with similar institutions.
With Ceder City and St. George, both universities offer NAU fans exciting opportunities for regional travel to support their team during away games, further enriching the fan experience and community ties within the conference.
