Southern Utah University Searches for New Athletic Director Following Knuth’s Resignation

CEDAR CITY — Southern Utah University is on the lookout for a new leader in its athletic department after Doug Knuth announced his resignation on Tuesday, three years into a tenure marked by significant accomplishments and challenges.

In his statement, Knuth expressed his desire to be closer to family, stating, “It has been a privilege to work with the coaches, staff, and student athletes.” He highlighted achievements such as record fundraising, the highest-ever academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 985, and notable accomplishments by the gymnastics and women’s basketball teams, including NCAA Tournament qualifications.

During Knuth’s leadership, the university saw the development of new athletic facilities, such as an artificial turf softball field and renovated areas for basketball and volleyball. These enhancements contributed to an improved student-athlete experience and vibrant game-day atmosphere.

However, Knuth’s departure follows a tumultuous period, marked by a department-wide Title IX investigation, which he publicly denied amid ongoing scrutiny. This investigation echoed challenges from his prior role at Nevada, where he was involved in multiple Title IX inquiries. His deputy, Marie Tuite, also faced serious allegations during her tenure elsewhere.

Knuth’s resignation is the second in June for SUU athletics, following volleyball coach Kacey Nady’s exit. In light of these developments, retired judge Tom Higbee has been appointed as interim athletic director.

SUU President Mindy Benson acknowledged Knuth’s commitment and accomplishments while the department navigates ongoing changes, including potential shifts in conference affiliations as the Western Athletic Conference faces a significant reduction in member schools.
