Strong Job Growth in Utah as Unemployment Stays Low
Utah’s nonfarm payroll employment showed a robust increase of 2.5% in May 2025 compared to the previous year, translating to an addition of 42,900 jobs. The state’s job count now stands at 1,786,000, with April’s unemployment rate estimated at 3.2%, slightly higher than the previously reported 3.1%. Approximately 58,220 Utahns remain unemployed, while the national unemployment rate holds steady at 4.2%. Ben Crabb, chief economist for the Utah Department of Workforce Services, emphasized the state’s strong economic performance, particularly in the private sector, despite the minor rise in unemployment.
Private sector employment has grown 2.3% year-over-year, with significant contributions from education and health services (18,000 jobs), construction (7,800 jobs), and manufacturing (3,200 jobs). However, two sectors—trade, transportation, and utilities, and other services—reported job losses.
