International Olympic Committee Welcomes New President Amid Utah’s 2034 Winter Games Preparations
LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Monday marks a significant day at the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe is set to assume her role as president. Coventry, who was elected in March, takes over from Thomas Bach, who held the position for 12 years.
June 23 is globally recognized as Olympic Day, and in Utah, Olympic and Paralympic athletes are visiting children at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital to celebrate the IOC’s founding in 1894. Meanwhile, officials from the Utah Organizing Committee for the 2034 Winter Games are in Switzerland for Coventry’s inauguration and to meet IOC staff.
Fraser Bullock, president of the organizing committee, emphasizes the importance of this trip as an opportunity to honor Bach’s legacy while looking forward to collaborating with Coventry, who could potentially lead through the 2034 Games. While Utah’s report on the upcoming Games isn’t on the agenda, the committee plans discussions on venue preparations, donor initiatives, and athlete support.
Additionally, they aim to extend a formal invitation for Coventry to visit Utah and experience the hospitality and venues firsthand. U.S. Olympic officials predict a fruitful decade ahead, including hosting the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles and Utah’s Winter Games.
