Savannah Eccles Johnston Appointed Director of UVU’s Master of Arts in Constitutional Government

Orem, UT – Utah Valley University’s Center for Constitutional Studies (CCS) has announced the appointment of Dr. Savannah Eccles Johnston as the new program director for the Master of Arts in Constitutional Government, Civics, and Law (MACGCL) program, effective July 1.

Dr. Johnston, an accomplished scholar and educator, has a strong focus on American political thought and constitutionalism. Her research has contributed to notable publications such as “American Political Thought” and “Politics, Groups, and Identities.” Previously, she served as an assistant professor of political science at Salt Lake Community College.

Matthew Brogdon, senior director of CCS, praised Johnston, stating, “Her leadership will be crucial as the M.A. program grows to serve teachers and citizens from across the country who want to gain expertise on the ideas and institutions necessary to support constitutional government, ordered liberty, and the rule of law.”

Expressing her enthusiasm about joining UVU, Johnston remarked, “I am thrilled to join one of the premier programs for constitutional studies in the United States. I have dedicated my life’s work to teaching the next generation how to understand and appreciate the Constitution, civil discourse, and the rule of law.”

Johnston, a Bountiful, Utah native, holds a doctorate and master’s degree in Politics and Government from Claremont Graduate University, along with a bachelor’s in political science from Brigham Young University. She co-hosts “This Constitution,” a podcast addressing contemporary political and constitutional queries, and engages over 47,000 followers on her Instagram account @savypolitics, where she simplifies complex political concepts.

She succeeds Dr. Troy Smith, who launched the MACGCL program in 2023 and will now direct the Constitutional Federalism Initiative. The MACGCL program equips students with a comprehensive understanding of the American founding and constitutional principles, offering both teaching and research tracks to cater to aspiring educators and scholars.
