Press Release: Celebrating Paul Poiret at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs
The Musée des Arts Décoratifs is launching "Fashion Is a Feast," an exhibition dedicated to the revolutionary designs of Paul Poiret, on Wednesday, running until January 11, 2026. Widely regarded as a pioneer in fashion, Poiret was instrumental in liberating women from restrictive corsets, drawing inspiration from Eastern cultures. His influence remains palpable today, inspiring contemporary designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, and Rei Kawakubo.
Curated by Marie-Sophie Carron de la Carrière, the exhibition is a vibrant tribute to Poiret’s multifaceted career, showcasing his innovative contributions to concept stores, event marketing, and lifestyle branding across various domains including interiors, wallpaper, and even children’s costumes. The show features over 550 objects, including beautifully preserved garments, photographs, and artworks from renowned artists like Raoul Dufy and Léon Bakst.
Visitors will experience Poiret’s artistic vision through a chronological and thematic display, highlighted by colorful set designs that echo his fascination with Fauvist colors. A standout piece includes an elegant Poiret evening gown captured in a 1924 Man Ray photograph of Peggy Guggenheim, showcasing the designer’s modernity and versatility.
The exhibition also reflects on Poiret’s life journey, from the pinnacle of his career—operating out of a luxurious mansion and hosting extravagant theme parties—to the financial ruin that followed a grand but costly exhibition in 1925. Carron de la Carrière notes this transition emphasizes the precarious nature of a fashion career.
"Fashion Is a Feast" not only celebrates Poiret’s legacy but also engages younger audiences with a look at the constrictive fashions that preceded him. This exhibition stands as a testament to Poiret’s indelible impact on the world of fashion and design.
