Cox Maintains Majority Approval Among Utah Voters
Salt Lake City, UT — A recent Deseret News/Hinckley Institute poll indicates that 56% of Utah voters approve of Governor Spencer Cox’s performance, marking a slight increase since the end of the 2025 legislative session. The poll, conducted by HarrisX from May 16-21 with a sample size of 805 registered voters, reveals that 68% of Republican respondents and 37% of Democrats express approval.
Cox’s rising popularity can be attributed to his focus on government efficiency, foreign partnerships, and promoting Utah’s religious values. His approval rating among Democrats jumped from 28% to 37%, while support among Republicans increased slightly from 66% to 68%. Among Independent voters, approval rose from 40% to 45%. Despite these increases, Cox remains around 10 percentage points below his pre-2024 election approval rating of nearly 65%.
Political analysts suggest that as Cox steps back from the legislative spotlight, a clearer picture of his governance emerges. Over the past year, he has made efforts to align more closely with conservative views, especially following his narrow primary win. This includes changing his stance on former President Donald Trump, pledging support through a personal letter, and emphasizing collaboration across the political spectrum.
In addition to domestic initiatives, Cox has made significant efforts internationally, becoming the first U.S. governor to conduct a trade mission to Canada, promoting economic ties amidst tariff tensions. His focus on bipartisan dialogue has also led him to engage with leaders like New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.
Cox is redefining his leadership style, emphasizing Utah’s unique religious values and launching initiatives aimed at governmental reform and efficiency. With continued support from the Republican Party, Cox’s approach appears to resonate with a broad array of Utah voters.
