Bipartisan Demands for Resignation from Utah Judge

Press Release

Utah Legislative Leaders Demand Resignation of Judge Over Controversial Remarks

Salt Lake City, UT – In a rare bipartisan move, Utah House Speaker Mike Schultz (R-Hooper) and House Minority Leader Angela Romero (D-Salt Lake City) have called for the immediate resignation of 7th District Judge Don Torgerson. This follows unsettling comments Torgerson made during a sentencing hearing for Aidan Hoffman, a defendant guilty of felony child sexual exploitation.

During the hearing, Torgerson referred to Hoffman’s “privilege” while justifying a sentence that did not include additional jail time or fines. His remarks, stating he had "seen worse," ignited outrage from both legal professionals and the public, prompting legislative leaders to criticize the judiciary’s handling of the situation. In a joint letter to Chief Justice Matthew Durrant, they deemed the judge’s comments “flat-out unacceptable.”

"There’s a growing concern that justice is not being served,” Schultz stated, emphasizing the need for judges to reflect compassion and integrity. The judiciary defended Torgerson’s decision citing plea agreements but faced backlash for not addressing his comments. Next steps for enforcement may include legislative recommendations, including potential impeachment.

Legislators stress the necessity for a judicial system that upholds victims’ dignity and public trust.
