Utah Advances Plans for School Safety Dashboard

Utah Launches Initiative for School Safety Dashboard

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — In a bid to enhance school safety and transparency, Utah is developing a state school safety dashboard. This initiative, led by Utah’s School Safety Taskforce, aims to provide detailed information about incidents such as bullying, harassment, and violence in local schools. Earlier this year, the task force allocated funds for the creation of this website, modeled after a similar platform in Florida.

During a recent meeting, members examined potential designs and functionalities for the dashboard. Notably, Max Schachter, whose son Alex lost his life in the Parkland school shooting, played a significant role in the development of Florida’s site. He stressed the importance of making safety data easily accessible to parents, stating, "Parents have a right to know what’s happening in their schools." He criticized the current system where vital data is often obscured in complex educational department spreadsheets.

To kickstart the dashboard project, the Utah School Safety Taskforce has approved $1.5 million, matching funds from the State Board of Education. This initiative represents a critical step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of students across the state.
