Colorado Sheriff’s Office Cuts Ties with Law Enforcement Group Chat Following Immigration Controversy

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) – The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado has removed its members from a law enforcement group chat after revelations that information shared within the chat was used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain a University of Utah student.

Carolina Dias Goncalves, a 19-year-old Utah resident originally from Brazil, was pulled over on June 5th near Grand Junction. Although the deputy let her go with a warning, he participated in a chat that included local, state, and federal officers. Shortly after her release, ICE agents stopped her for immigration enforcement, utilizing details from the chat, a violation of state law originally intended for narcotics operations.

The sheriff’s office acknowledged their unawareness of the chat’s misuse and emphasized their commitment to preventing such incidents in the future. Goncalves is currently held in ICE’s Denver Contract Detention Facility, prompting friends to initiate a GoFundMe campaign for legal assistance. They described her as a law-abiding student pursuing educational opportunities, now facing an uncertain future.
