Caroline Dias Goncalves: University of Utah Student Arrested After Traffic Stop
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Caroline Dias Goncalves, a 19-year-old University of Utah student, remains detained in Colorado following her arrest by ICE agents on June 5. The incident stemmed from a traffic stop conducted by a Mesa County deputy, who shared information about Goncalves in a group chat that included federal agents. Initially pulled over for a minor violation, she was released with a warning but was subsequently arrested by ICE agents minutes later, which has raised concerns among her friends and legal representatives.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office stated that the chat was intended solely for drug interdiction and was not meant for immigration enforcement, a breach of Colorado law. Following this incident, they have removed their members from the communication group.
Goncalves’ attorney, Adam Crayk, indicated that her upcoming master calendar hearing is a crucial moment where they may request her release on bond, proving she poses no danger or flight risk. Her friends have expressed deep concern, maintaining close communication and hope for her return. "We’re really excited to see her soon, hopefully,” said friend Daniela Zajic.
