Doug Knuth Resigns as SUU Athletic Director
CEDAR CITY, UT — Doug Knuth, who joined Southern Utah University (SUU) as athletic director in 2022, announced his resignation this week, citing a need to be closer to his family. In a news release, Knuth expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with the university’s coaches, staff, and student-athletes, stating, “It has been a privilege.”
Knuth formerly served as athletic director at the University of Nevada, Reno, where his tenure was marred by allegations regarding Title IX violations related to the treatment of women’s sports programs. Despite these claims, which sparked a federal investigation, Knuth has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has stated that he cooperated fully with any inquiries.
During his time at SUU, Knuth was recognized for his efforts in fundraising for facility enhancements and for fostering a vibrant game-day atmosphere. SUU President Mindy Benson acknowledged his contributions, including efforts to improve the student-athlete experience, and wished him well in future endeavors.
Knuth’s departure follows the recent resignation of Kacey Nady, the former volleyball coach, suggesting a period of transition within the athletic department. In light of Knuth’s resignation, SUU has appointed Tom Higbee, a retired judge and SUU alumnus, as interim athletic director effective July 15. Higbee, who is well-respected within the community, will oversee the athletics program until a permanent replacement is found.
As SUU navigates this transition, the focus remains on maintaining a strong sense of community and support for its student-athletes amidst ongoing changes.
