Transformational Changes Announced at Oklahoma State University’s College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology
June 17, 2025

Oklahoma State University’s College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology (CEAT) is set to undergo significant academic and leadership changes across its Divisions, effective July 1, 2025. The Division of Engineering Technology and the School of Materials Science and Engineering are rebranding as two new schools: the School of Materials, Mechatronics, and Manufacturing Engineering (MMME) and the School of Fire, Construction, and Emergency Management (FCEM).

The MMME will incorporate programs in mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, mechatronics and robotics, and materials science and engineering. Meanwhile, FCEM will focus on construction engineering technology, fire protection and safety engineering technology, and fire and emergency management.

In conjunction with these structural changes, CEAT has appointed four new heads for its schools. Dr. Jim Smay will lead the MMME. A former assistant professor who has risen through the ranks since joining OSU in 2002, Smay brings extensive experience, having served as the school head for Materials Science and Engineering since 2021.

Dr. Heather Yates will head FCEM. A member of the OSU Construction Faculty since 2006, Yates has held various esteemed positions, including program coordinator of construction engineering technology and professor.

Professor Nathan Richardson has been appointed as the head of the School of Architecture. Having joined in 2009, Richardson is recognized for his contributions to architecture education and is also a Riata Faculty Fellow.

Lastly, Dr. Mark Krzmarzick will serve as the interim head of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. With a tenure at OSU beginning in 2013, he has been promoted to professor this year.

Dean Dr. Hanchen Huang emphasized the importance of these changes, stating that they will foster an environment conducive to faculty development and offer students in-demand, forward-looking programs that enhance the university’s commitment to serving Oklahoma.
