Press Release: Uncertainty Looms Over Ukrainian Immigrants in Utah Amid Immigration Policy Changes
Lindon, Utah – Ukrainian immigrants and their supporters in Utah are expressing deep concern over their future in the U.S. as immigration initiatives undergo significant changes. Following the Trump administration’s recent executive order, the Uniting for Ukraine initiative, which was designed to provide a pathway for Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war with Russia, has been paused, creating a cloud of uncertainty for many families.
Valentyna Ahieieva, a Ukrainian immigrant who arrived in Utah in August 2023, shared her anxiety about her family’s lawful status, which will expire next August. "We don’t want to return back because the attacks are still going on," Ahieieva said, emphasizing the precarious situation many face.
The Trump-era policies have not only slowed down new immigration but have also made those already in the country feel unwelcome. "It seems to be just a general predisposition to shut down immigration," stated Jared Oates, a supporter of the Ahieieva family, highlighting the urgent need for legislative action.
In an effort to remedy this situation, advocates are pushing for the Ukrainian Adjustment Act to provide a legal means for existing residents to remain in the U.S. While some lawmakers, including Rep. Mike Kennedy, have shown sympathy, advocates worry that the proposal might not gain traction in the current political climate.
The urgency of the issue is underscored by reports of families, like one who relocated to Spain after their lawful status expired. "They’re going to become homeless welfare cases, and we’re doing that to them," lamented Win Packer, co-founder of the nonprofit Hope Across Borders.
With approximately 1,000 Ukrainians in Utah currently benefiting from the Uniting for Ukraine program, community support is vital. As these families adjust to life in America, the Packer family and others continue to fight for their legal rights and safe futures.
