Fire Officials Warn Utahns of Increased Wildfire Risks Amid Red Flag Warnings
SALT LAKE CITY — Fire officials are urging residents to exercise extreme caution in light of heightened wildfire risks across Utah. The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for most of central, southern, and eastern Utah until late Monday night, citing low humidity and strong winds as critical factors.
The warning impacts areas from St. George to Nephi and extends north to Vernal and Duchesne. Karl Hunt, spokesperson for the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, emphasized the importance of using “fire sense” and taking necessary precautions, especially in regions with Stage 1 fire restrictions already in place.
Despite the Wasatch Front not being under the same warnings, Hunt cautioned residents to remain vigilant to avoid igniting fires while outdoors. Recent incidents included three fires attributed to target shooting in the area.
While Utah has seen a 57% reduction in human-caused fires over the last four years, concerns remain high as these incidents are still a leading cause of wildfires. Residents are encouraged to report any fire sightings immediately by calling 911, enhancing efforts for rapid containment. More fire prevention tips can be found on the Utah Fire Sense website.
