Tragic Shooting at Salt Lake City “No Kings” Protest Claims Life of Bystander
Salt Lake City, UT – A shooting during the “No Kings” protest led to the death of a bystander, Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, 39, known for his work in fashion and his Samoan heritage. The incident unfolded Saturday evening when 24-year-old Arturo Gamboa brandished a rifle, prompting a man identified as part of a peacekeeping team to open fire with a handgun.
According to police, Gamboa was confronted by the peacekeepers after he withdrew his weapon. As tensions rose, he aimed his rifle at the crowd, leading to a chaotic scene where people fled in fear. The man in the neon vest fired three shots, injuring Gamboa and fatally wounding Ah Loo. Gamboa has been charged with murder and remains in custody.
Manifesting nationwide anger against perceived authoritarianism, the protest saw varied confrontations across multiple cities. While Salt Lake City’s peacekeepers tried to de-escalate the situation, organizers emphasized a no-weapons policy.
Ah Loo’s death has prompted calls for reflection on the violence that erupted during what was intended to be a peaceful demonstration. A GoFundMe page has been created to support his family, as they navigate this tragic loss.
