WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A shooting at WestFest carnival in Centennial Park on Sunday night resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including an 8-month-old infant. The incident unfolded when two groups engaged in an argument, prompting police officers, who were present at the event, to intervene.

As officers approached to diffuse the situation, a 16-year-old male from one group allegedly drew a firearm and opened fire. In response, one officer discharged their weapon but did not hit anyone. Tragically, along with the infant, a 41-year-old bystander and an 18-year-old male from one of the groups were also killed.

Additionally, two teenagers, a 17-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, sustained gunshot wounds to their arms; however, it remains unclear if they were linked to either group involved in the altercation. Their medical conditions were not disclosed.

The 16-year-old suspect has been taken into custody, and his identity has not been made public. This shocking incident has sent ripples of grief through the community in West Valley City, a suburb of Salt Lake City, home to approximately 134,000 residents.
