SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, a beloved fashion designer and former “Project Runway” contestant known for his dedication to Pacific Island artists, was fatally shot during the “No Kings” protest in Salt Lake City on Saturday night. The incident occurred when two men fired at a demonstrator wielding a rifle, inadvertently striking Ah Loo in the stomach. He died shortly thereafter in a hospital.

The police reported uncertainty regarding whether the shooters were affiliated with the protest’s organizers. One of the shooters, Arturo Gamboa, has been arrested on murder charges for creating the dangerous situation, while the identity of the shooter who hit Ah Loo remains undisclosed.

A self-taught designer, Ah Loo, 39, had a significant impact on his community, advocating for marginalized voices and uplifting Pacific Island artists through his work with the organization Create Pacific. Friends remember him fondly, highlighting his distinctive style and commitment to his heritage. A GoFundMe for Ah Loo’s family has raised over $100,000 in 48 hours, underscoring the loss felt by many. His friend Benjamin Powell confirmed that a planned fashion show will continue in Ah Loo’s honor.
