Press Article: Bystander Fatally Shot During Utah Protest
An innocent bystander was tragically killed during a "No Kings" protest in Salt Lake City on Saturday. The victim, 39-year-old Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, was shot amidst the demonstration, which drew approximately 10,000 participants. Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd confirmed that Ah Loo was not the intended target.
The shooting occurred when a man identified as Arturo Gamboa, 24, approached the crowd armed with a rifle. Witnesses reported that two peacekeepers, dressed in neon vests, opened fire in response to the perceived threat, inadvertently striking Ah Loo while also hitting Gamboa. Redd noted that the peacekeepers acted after Gamboa brandished the weapon.
Despite the quick response from SWAT medics who provided life-saving assistance, Ah Loo succumbed to his injuries later that night. Gamboa was hospitalized for his own wounds and has since been charged with murder. Police reported that Gamboa was found with a rifle and a gas mask, but had no prior criminal record. The peacekeeper involved in the shooting is cooperating with authorities. This incident has underscored the risks associated with large-scale protests.
