Press Article: Tragic Shooting at Salt Lake City Protest Claims Life of Innocent Bystander
SALT LAKE CITY — A 39-year-old man, Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, has died following a shooting during the “No Kings” protest on Saturday, according to local police. Chief Brian Redd reported that Ah Loo, who was merely an innocent bystander at the demonstration, was shot by Arturo Gamboa, 24, a participant on the event’s peacekeeping team.
The incident unfolded when Gamboa allegedly retrieved a rifle from behind a wall, prompting two peacekeepers in brightly colored vests to confront him. Witnesses say Gamboa raised his weapon, leading one of the peacekeepers to fire three shots. While Gamboa sustained a relatively minor injury, Ah Loo was fatally struck.
Emphasizing the tragic nature of the situation, Chief Redd stated, “Our victim was not the intended target.” The chaos caused by the gunfire terrified hundreds of demonstrators, forcing many to flee to safety.
Gamboa has been taken into custody on murder charges. The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to understand the motivations and context behind Gamboa’s actions. Meanwhile, the Utah chapter of the 50501 movement, which helped organize the nationwide protests, condemned the violence and the loss of life.
