Gov. Cox’s Perspective on Salt Lake City’s New Flags – Deseret News

Utah Governor Criticizes State Flag Ban and Salt Lake City’s Flag Alternatives

Utah Governor Spencer Cox openly expressed his disapproval of both the state’s flag ban and Salt Lake City’s new alternative flags during his recent monthly press conference. The governor described the flag ban, known as HB77, which prohibits the display of most flags by public educators and government bodies, as “dumb.” His remarks were prompted by Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall’s adoption of three new city flags featuring the sego lily logo alongside the Juneteenth, Progress Pride, and transgender flags, designed to circumvent the ban.

“I’m sure they feel great that they got around this dumb law, and they did it with dumb flags,” Cox remarked, emphasizing that the situation regarding flags is fundamentally flawed. He reiterated his concerns for marginalized communities, noting that the legislation overlooks groups such as Japanese Americans and Polynesian Americans.

Cox proposed an alternative approach to fostering unity, suggesting that Utah should focus on raising the American flag, as it embodies representation for all citizens. His frustration was palpable, as he labeled the entire flag debate as “dumb” multiple times, culminating in the sentiment, “We’re living in the dumbest timeline.”

While some urban leaders may celebrate their creative workaround to the flag ban, the governor’s comments underscore a rift over the state’s approach to flag representation and inclusion. With growing discourse surrounding identity and representation, Cox’s remarks may reignite discussions about the need for a more inclusive flag policy in Utah.
