Upcoming Fashion Auctions: Princess Diana’s Wardrobe and Jane Birkin’s Iconic Bag
Fashion enthusiasts are in for a treat with two major auctions scheduled in the coming weeks. Julien’s Auctions will offer over 100 items from the late Princess Diana’s wardrobe on June 26, while the original Hermès Birkin bag created for Jane Birkin will go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in Paris on July 10.
The auction titled "Princess Diana’s Style & A Royal Collection" includes garments that reflect Diana’s significant role in modernizing the British monarchy through her fashion choices. Items up for bid include a notable 1988 silk floral dress by Bellville Sassoon, estimated at $200,000-$300,000, and a cream silk gown designed by Catherine Walker for Diana’s Gulf tour in 1986, carrying a similar valuation. Other noteworthy pieces include a Dior handbag gifted by former French first lady Bernadette Chirac and a sketch of Diana’s famous 1981 wedding dress.
Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien’s Auctions, emphasized the significance of this collection, stating, “This is the largest Princess Diana auction… These items are considered an asset class, likely to appreciate over time.” A portion of the proceeds will benefit the charity Muscular Dystrophy UK.
Meanwhile, the original Hermès Birkin bag, crafted 40 years ago, is lauded as the most coveted handbag globally. Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags, remarked on its legacy, noting that it has evolved from a practical accessory to a symbol of luxury. The bag was first showcased to the public last year and has garnered immense interest.
With previous sales of similar items setting high benchmarks, both auctions promise to attract avid collectors and fashion aficionados alike.
