Salt Lake City Firefighters Ensure Hydrant Readiness Amid Fire Season
SALT LAKE CITY — As fire season intensifies, Salt Lake City firefighters are diligently testing the city’s thousands of fire hydrants to ensure they are functioning properly. Captain Brandt Hancuff explained, “We test the caps to make sure we can get them open and clear any debris inside the hydraulic barrel." Hydrant upkeep is crucial for firefighters, as these vital water sources can significantly impact their firefighting efforts.
The department conducts biannual checks in collaboration with Salt Lake City Public Utilities, benefiting from a robust water supply that incorporates both gravity-fed and pump-fed systems. In case of hydrant failure, alternate water sources—such as water tenders and relay pumps—are available to maintain firefighting capabilities.
Residents in fire-prone areas, such as Capitol Hill, expressed confidence in the fire department’s preparedness. With a hydrant located near their homes, locals like Joseph Bright feel secure, especially following last year’s close brush with wildfires.
During drought conditions, the department conserves water by testing hydrants without flowing water. Community members are encouraged to report any hydrant issues to the non-emergency line at 801-799-3473 for prompt repairs, ensuring ongoing safety.
