Utah Wildlife Board Implements New Hunting Regulations

Salt Lake City – In a public meeting on Thursday, the Utah Wildlife Board approved new rules reflecting recent legislative changes aimed at enhancing wildlife management. A key update mandates that individuals 18 and older must hold a hunting or fishing license to access wildlife management areas (WMAs) in designated "class one" and "class two" counties, including Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, and Weber. Exemptions were established for educational centers like the Eccles Wildlife Education Center, and for DWR employees and federal land management staff on official duties.

The Board also clarified regulations for hunting guides and outfitters, shifting oversight from the Division of Professional Licensing to the Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR). New rules require guides and outfitters to obtain a registration certificate, which must be renewed annually.

Additional amendments to the Dedicated Hunter Program allow new participants to earn service credit before joining, and changes were made to the Conservation Permit Program to improve conservation funding. Translocation efforts for sage-grouse were also approved, marking the first such initiative since 2019.

These regulations, effective July 1, aim to promote wildlife conservation while ensuring sustainable hunting practices in Utah. For complete details, visit the DWR website.
