University of Utah Student Detained by ICE After Traffic Stop

Caroline Dias Goncalves, a 19-year-old University of Utah student from Brazil, has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since June 5, following a traffic stop in Colorado. Dias Goncalves was initially pulled over in Fruita for driving too closely to a semi-truck. After displaying her driver’s license, which an officer deemed suspicious, she was questioned about her background. Eventually, she identified herself as a Brazilian immigrant who came to the U.S. as a child.

Despite the officer letting her go with a warning, Dias Goncalves was later apprehended by immigration agents in Grand Junction, with no explanation given for her arrest. Her family has not only been left in distress, but they are also fearful of retaliation from ICE for speaking out. The family, currently raising funds for legal assistance, is grappling with exorbitant costs related to Diaz Goncalves’ case.

Dias Goncalves has been pursuing her education on a merit scholarship and was working towards a nursing career. Her initial court appearance is scheduled for June 18, while her family and friends continue advocating for her release from the Aurora detention center, where conditions have raised concerns.
