Southern Utah University Welcomes 2025 Hall of Fame Inductees

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Southern Utah University (SUU) is excited to announce its 2025 Athletics Hall of Fame inductees, celebrating a remarkable collection of athletes, coaches, and one historic team whose contributions have immensely shaped Thunderbird Athletics.

Director of Athletics Doug Knuth expressed pride in this diverse class, stating, "These inductees represent the rich tradition and excellence of Thunderbird Athletics, from pioneering figures to record-breaking athletes."

The group will be honored during the Hall of Fame Football Game on September 13, when SUU faces Northern Arizona University at Eccles Coliseum as part of Homecoming Week.

Among the honorees is Bill Evans, the winningest coach in SUU Men’s Basketball history, recognized for leading the Thunderbirds to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001. His career boasts 208 victories and multiple coaching accolades.

Diana Medina Mitchell, a standout in Women’s Track & Field (2008–2012), remains an eight-time conference champion and ranks among the top-10 in nine different events. Her legacy as a distance runner is unparalleled.

Also being recognized is Analaine Mailoto, who holds SUU’s record for the most kills in Women’s Volleyball and was a dominant force from 2009 to 2012.

Neil Gardner, a key figure behind the scenes for over two decades, significantly enhanced SUU Athletics’ media outreach. He passed away in December 2022, leaving a lasting legacy.

Sherman Cooper, a legacy inductee and pioneer, set a Utah State record in the long jump while competing from 1909 to 1912, laying the groundwork for competitive athletics.

Other honorees include two-sport athlete John Borla, cross-country champion Hayden Hawks, and basketball star Hailey Mandelko Ferry. The 1981 Softball Team, known for their exceptional season and historic postseason run, rounds out this year’s inductees.
