Indiana Pacers Take 2-1 Series Lead in NBA Finals with Strong Finish Against Oklahoma City Thunder

In Game 3 of the NBA Finals, the Indiana Pacers delivered a decisive performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder, winning 116-107 and taking a 2-1 series lead. Unlike their typical comeback style, the Pacers showcased strong defensive tactics and effective offensive plays, forcing the Thunder into mistakes. This victory is significant, given that historically, teams winning Game 3 of a tied Finals go on to win the series 80.5% of the time.

Oklahoma City struggled in the fourth quarter, scoring just 18 points and shooting poorly, with star player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander limited to 1-of-3 shooting during this stretch. Although he finished with 24 points, it took him 20 attempts, along with six turnovers. In contrast, the Pacers thrived on fast-break points and contributions from their bench, notably reserve Bennedict Mathurin, who scored 27 points after not appearing in the first quarter. This performance marked the highest scoring by a Finals reserve since 2011, with Indiana’s bench outscoring Oklahoma City’s 49-18.

Despite a rough ending to the third quarter, the Pacers regrouped, largely thanks to Tyrese Haliburton’s aggressive play and TJ McConnell’s defensive efforts, which ignited the crowd. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault acknowledged the need for his team to maintain their style of play over the full game to secure a win. The Pacers have demonstrated resilience, but the Thunder will need to overcome their playoff inexperience to mount a comeback in Game 4, scheduled for Friday in Indianapolis.
