Utah Governor Backs Trump’s Decision to Deploy National Guard to California – Deseret News

Gov. Spencer Cox Addresses National Guard Deployment and Protests in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — In a recent monthly conference, Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed support for President Trump’s decision to federalize National Guard troops to address escalating protests in Los Angeles, describing the action as constitutional. However, he voiced a desire for states to retain control over their National Guard forces, warning that if protests in Utah turn violent, demonstrators will face arrest.

Cox characterized the Los Angeles protests, which involved vandalism and confrontations with law enforcement, as unacceptable in a civil society. “When things get out of control, somebody has to stop it,” he stated, acknowledging the challenges posed by violent demonstrations triggered by federal deportation policies.

While he commended Trump for taking action, Cox hesitated to fully endorse the federal approach, considering the implications of military involvement. He remarked, “I wish the Constitution didn’t say that,” regarding the president’s power to deploy state troops.

As local California leaders criticized Trump’s military involvement, Cox articulated Utah’s contrasting strategy for handling protests. He emphasized that Utah should be a safe space for peaceful demonstration but a hostile environment for rioting. “The minute you start to spray paint the Capitol, we will arrest you,” he warned. He reassured citizens that local law enforcement would be well-prepared for potential unrest from the planned "No Kings" protests this weekend.

On immigration enforcement matters, Cox noted the rising frequency of ICE raids under the current administration, asserting that these actions align with Utah’s immigration policy framework established by the Utah Compact. He emphasized the state’s commitment to law enforcement, suggesting that support for federal deportation policies is consistent with Utah’s approach to immigration.
