Governor Critiques Salt Lake City’s Flag Maneuver
SALT LAKE CITY — Governor Spencer Cox did not hold back during his monthly news conference, labeling the alternative flags raised by Salt Lake City to circumvent a new state law as "dumb." The law prohibits "non-sanctioned" flags from being displayed in classrooms and government properties. In response, Mayor Erin Mendenhall and the Salt Lake City Council adopted modified versions of the LGBTQ Pride, Transgender Visibility, and Juneteenth flags, with the latter being raised on Tuesday.
Mayor Mendenhall expressed pride in the city’s actions, stating they reflect American values. However, this bold move has drawn ire from Utah lawmakers, who have indicated potential consequences. Cox, who allowed the flag law to take effect without his endorsement, criticized both the law and the city’s response. “I’m sure they feel great that they got around this dumb law and they did it with dumb flags,” he remarked, urging a focus on the American flag instead. "The legislature doesn’t need to be in everybody’s business all the time," he added, calling it "the dumbest timeline." The clash highlights ongoing tensions between state lawmakers and city officials over issues of representation and freedom of expression.
