Is There Movement in Pac-12 Expansion? – Deseret News

Pac-12 Conference Faces Urgent Expansion Decisions Amid Mediation with Mountain West

As the clock ticks down towards a crucial July 1, 2026 deadline, the Pac-12 conference finds itself in a tense standoff over expansion. It has been 247 days since its last addition, Gonzaga, and further developments remain largely speculative. Currently, the Pac-12 is engaged in mediation with the Mountain West Conference (MWC) regarding exit fees for five schools—Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State—planning to join the Pac-12 in 2026.

The MWC is demanding almost $150 million in exit fees and penalties, a figure that has created friction as Pac-12 leaders and the departing schools resist these costs. Recently, the five schools notified the MWC of their intentions to leave, marking a significant step in the transition.

Speculation around potential expansion candidates continues, with Texas State frequently mentioned as a key option to secure the necessary eight football-sponsoring members. Other schools such as UNLV, Memphis, and Tulane have also been discussed. According to sports journalist John Canzano, an expansion announcement could come soon after the settlement with the MWC is reached.

Canzano emphasized that while discussions are ongoing, "nothing is set in stone" regarding realignment. Reports suggest the Pac-12 is preparing to expand beyond eight members, with flexibility being key in its strategy. Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould reiterated the conference’s aim to attract schools that align with its goals and have a positive trajectory.

While Pac-12’s future remains uncertain, Gould asserted the revamped conference will more closely resemble the Big 12 and ACC rather than the Group of Six conferences. The impending expansion is vital for the conference, especially with the looming deadline to secure its competitive standing in college sports.
