Salt Lake City Celebrates 35th Annual Utah Pride Parade Amid Political Challenges
SALT LAKE CITY — The 35th annual Utah Pride Parade unfolded with exuberance and unity as members of an LGBTQ motorcycle club inaugurated the festivities. Tens of thousands gathered along 100 South on Sunday, waving rainbow flags and showcasing a vibrant array of colors as over 100 organizations participated in the procession.
Participants carried signs proclaiming messages such as “Love First” and “Everyone is welcome,” reflecting a collective spirit of support during a tumultuous time for the LGBTQ community. Autumn Krogh, who attended with her pet pig, emphasized the importance of showing solidarity amid recent political developments that have sparked concern among many.
The parade coincided with a weekend of events, including a march to the state Capitol and an interfaith worship service. This year, heightened significance was felt due to policies like HB77, which restricts government and school displays of Pride flags. Despite efforts for political neutrality, Salt Lake City officials, many of whom identify as queer, joined the parade, showcasing the city’s new Sego Belonging flag.
Local leaders, including Salt Lake City Council Vice Chairman Alejandro Puy, highlighted the necessity of such demonstrations: “This is about celebrating our differences.” As support radiated through the streets, the event underscored the enduring resilience of the LGBTQ community amidst ongoing challenges.
