Pherousa Shipping Receives Approval for Emissions-Free Ammonia Cracking Technology

Pherousa Shipping has achieved a significant milestone with the issuance of an Approval in Principle (AiP) from ABS for its innovative ammonia cracking technology, designed to power ships using proton exchange membrane fuel cells and a fuel gas supply system (FGSS). This groundbreaking emissions-free propulsion system is set to be implemented on Pherousa’s Ultramax 64,000 dwt bulk carrier, which will be utilized for transporting copper—a crucial material in the production of solar panels and electric vehicles.

Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of this innovation, stating, "We are witnessing rapid developments around ammonia as an alternative fuel. The ability to crack ammonia to produce hydrogen for fuel cells has great potential to accelerate the transition to low or zero carbon emissions in the maritime sector." He also underlined ABS’s commitment to ensuring the safety of ammonia as a marine fuel.

Hans Bredrup, Chairman of Pherousa AS, noted that the AiP represents a vital step forward in creating a zero-emission solution for the maritime industry. "This allows us to advance the design and construction of our series of 64,000 dwt bulk carriers, ensuring that copper, a key element in global decarbonization, can be transported across oceans without any carbon footprint," he stated.

Pherousa’s project boasts strong partnerships with notable entities, including designers Deltamarin, flag state Marshall Islands, Babcock International Group for FGSS supply, and Metacon, the technology developer and stakeholder. The initiative reflects a promising move toward sustainable shipping and highlights the potential of ammonia as an alternative marine fuel.
