Vigil Commemorates Utah County Man Who Passed Away Suddenly at Church Youth Camp

Community Mourns Loss of Alex Johnson at Candlelight Vigil

SPRINGVILLE, Utah (KUTV) — The Springville community came together on Saturday to honor Alex Johnson, who was found dead while camping with a youth church group near Wasatch Mountain State Park. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirmed that the incident occurred outside of church-owned property. As the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office investigates the cause of death, friends and family gathered for a poignant candlelight vigil at Springville High School.

"He’s my baby boy," expressed Alice Heaps, Johnson’s mother, who described him as a devoted husband and father of four. "He made everyone feel seen." Ryan Bendtschnieder, a close friend, recalled his disbelief at the tragic news, noting, "Alex was larger than life."

Johnson was known for his deep commitment to his community, church, and family, often balancing multiple responsibilities yet always finding time for daily calls to his loved ones. Heaps reflected on his enduring legacy of service and genuine love for people.

A GoFundMe page has been established to aid the Johnson family with funeral costs and to support his wife and children as they face life without him. Community members are encouraged to contribute during this difficult time.
