John Brenkus, "Sport Science" Host, Dies at 54, Highlighting Mental Health Struggles
John Brenkus, the Emmy-winning host and co-creator of ESPN’s celebrated series "Sport Science," passed away on May 31, 2025. He was 54. His family confirmed his death via a statement on his X account, revealing he had been battling depression. They requested privacy during this difficult time and encouraged others facing similar struggles to seek help.
Brenkus, who founded Brinx.TV and co-founded Base Productions, had previously opened up about his mental health challenges. In January 2023, during a conversation with fellow ESPN colleague Marcellus Wiley, he candidly discussed a severe bout of depression that led to a suicide attempt. After selling "Sport Science" and relocating to Park City, Utah, he faced isolation, which deepened his struggles. He recalled, “I was flat-out suicidal… so much so, I had a noose tied around my neck.” It was his loyal dog, Zepplin, who intervened at a critical moment, pulling him from his despair. Through therapy, he eventually found a path to recovery, stating, “I have never been depressed… from that moment forward.”
Brenkus’ "Sport Science" series aimed to demystify sports using innovative technology, garnering six Emmy awards since its debut in 2007. ESPN honored Brenkus as an "innovator, an entertainer, and an educator," emphasizing the deep impact he had on sports broadcasting.
Wiley and countless others in the sports community expressed their sorrow over Brenkus’ passing. His death serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of discussing mental health, especially within high-pressure environments.
