Press Release: Community Bands Together for "Chipper Days" in Herriman to Mitigate Wildfire Risks
HERRIMAN, Utah — The Hi-Country Estates I community is actively combating wildfire threats during their annual “Chipper Days” event. Residents gathered brush and dead trees, while firefighters from the Unified Fire Authority brought in a wood chipper to transform the debris into mulch for local gardens. To show appreciation for their service, community members provided meals for the firefighters.
Terree Kay, who organized the initiative, highlighted its growth since its inception in 2010, when only 12 homes participated. This year, participation surged to 54 homes, reflecting a growing commitment to wildfire preparedness. “We live in a wildland urban interface, and it’s essential to address these risks,” Kay stated.
A recent report for Governor Spencer Cox indicates that Utah communities must enhance wildfire preparedness, as fire seasons have expanded to year-round threats. With strong local and federal coordination, the report underscores the importance of proactive communication regarding wildfire risks, recommending community-specific evacuation plans and ongoing public alerts.
The report also revealed significant challenges, including a lack of volunteers for firefighting services amidst rising demands on their time. It suggested improvements such as offering healthcare benefits to seasonal firefighters to bolster recruitment and retention.
Gov. Cox praised the report, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility in wildfire prevention. “Human-caused wildfires in our state are significantly below the national average. We are enhancing coordination and fuel reduction efforts across Utah,” he stated.
Kay urges other communities to follow suit in reducing wildfire risks by keeping properties maintained. “Help your neighbor if you can. Your home is as protected as your neighbor’s is,” Kay advised. Herriman city officials are committed to ongoing evaluations of emergency preparedness, particularly given the area’s vulnerability to wildfire.
