Downtown Salt Lake City Brimming with Summer Events Amid Accessibility Concerns
SALT LAKE CITY — This summer, downtown Salt Lake City is set to host an array of events, leading to increased road closures and access challenges, particularly for attendees of city meetings. Peter Makowski, deputy director for business development, highlighted the busy schedule while acknowledging concerns over ADA accessibility.
Longtime resident Margaret Holloway expressed frustration over parking barriers obstructing access to city hall during critical budget discussions. She urged for temporary adjustments to improve accessibility on non-event days.
Nate Crippes, supervising attorney at the Disability Law Center, who also serves on the mayor’s accessibility commission, emphasized the importance of maintaining accessible parking spots while accommodating event setups.
Although event preparations, like the Pride festival, necessitate barriers, city officials stress that the City & County building remains operational, with alternative parking available at the nearby library and surrounding streets.
Makowski reassured the community that input on accessibility is welcomed, encouraging all residents to participate in downtown events this month while working to enhance accessibility for all.
