Impact of Northern Utah Job Corps Closure Resonates Widely

Clearfield Contractors Sue to Block Job Corps Closures Amid Economic Concerns

CLEARFIELD, Utah — Contractors have initiated a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s decision to terminate Job Corps, the largest employment training initiative for low-income youth in the U.S. Last week, the U.S. Department of Labor announced that all contractor-operated Job Corps centers would close by June 30, citing financial deficits, low graduation rates, and safety issues. This move affects centers across the country, including one in Clearfield.

The shutdown has immediate repercussions for thousands of students and the businesses that employ them. Eric Hubbell, owner of Hubbell Handyman & Hauling Services, expressed shock at the abrupt staffing loss as most of his team—largely comprised of Job Corps students—will return to their home states within days. “It’s disappointing to lose that many people that quick," he lamented.

Karece Thompson, an outreach specialist, highlighted the program’s importance, reflecting on his own struggles and the second chance Job Corps provided him. He emphasized that the youth involved are not "castaways" but individuals in need of support. As businesses like Hubbell’s brace for the impact, the future for affected students remains uncertain. The U.S. Department of Labor did not provide immediate comment on the matter.
