Utah Health Officials Alert Public After Measles Exposure Risk

SALT LAKE CITY—Utah’s vaccination rates for early childhood immunizations have been trending downward, prompting concern after an unvaccinated visitor from out of state traveled to southwestern Utah while infected with measles. The individual visited family and spent time in the community during Memorial Day weekend, potentially exposing unvaccinated residents to the highly contagious virus.

The Utah Department of Health and Human Services noted that, while the overall risk remains low, they are closely monitoring the situation amid rising measles cases in surrounding states. In 2023, over 1,000 measles cases have been reported across 33 states, primarily among those unvaccinated.

Currently, 88.8% of Utah kindergarteners are vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), trailing the national average of 92.7%. Data shows a decline in the percentage of Utah children who received their first MMR dose by age 24 months, from 94.5% for those born in 2019 to 89.8% for 2021.

Officials urge residents to stay informed about vaccination benefits, emphasizing that vaccines are crucial for public health. Those exhibiting measles-like symptoms are advised to stay home and contact healthcare providers before visiting facilities.

Utah health authorities continue efforts to promote accurate information about vaccinations as they closely assess the situation.
