Potential Measles Outbreak in Southwest Utah
St. George, UT – June 4, 2025 – Health officials in Utah are on high alert following a confirmed case of measles involving an unvaccinated, out-of-state resident who visited southwest Utah. The individual was infectious during their stay on May 26 and 27, where they interacted with other unvaccinated individuals, raising concerns about a potential outbreak.
The Utah Department of Health and Human Services reported that while the general public’s risk remains low, awareness is crucial due to rising measles cases in nearby states. Health officials are actively identifying those who may have been exposed to the virus.
Residents exhibiting measles-like symptoms, including high fever and rash, are urged to isolate and contact medical facilities in advance to minimize exposure to others. This incident marks Utah’s second potential measles exposure in recent weeks; an infected traveler from Canada was reported on May 19, with no subsequent cases linked to that incident.
Measles is highly contagious and can lead to severe health complications. The last reported case in Utah occurred in March 2023, with no secondary infections identified at that time. The community is reminded to stay vigilant as health officials continue to monitor the situation.
