Study Claims Russia’s Ukraine War Troop Casualties Approach 1 Million

According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Russia’s war in Ukraine is expected to result in over 1 million casualties, including approximately 250,000 soldier deaths, by this summer. The total figure includes around 400,000 casualties for Ukraine, with deaths estimated between 60,000 and 100,000. This grim milestone underscores the high human cost of President Vladimir Putin’s military actions and reflects his apparent disregard for Russian soldiers. Historically, this number is stark, representing five times the death toll of all Russian and Soviet conflicts since World War II.

CSIS’s insights align with earlier assessments from Western intelligence, indicating that Russia has been suffering around 1,000 troop casualties—killed or injured—daily. While Putin’s involvement in Ukraine dates back to 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and support for pro-Russian separatists, the current figures specifically relate to the full-scale invasion that began in February 2022.

Putin has attempted to justify the invasion by claiming that Ukraine has never been a truly independent nation and expressing concerns about NATO expansion threatening Russia’s borders. However, the initial advance on Kyiv was thwarted by a strong Ukrainian defense. Subsequently, Russian military tactics have shifted to attritional warfare, characterized by a “meat grinder” approach that involves sending waves of troops into battle to wear down Ukrainian defenses. This strategy indicates a reliance on overwhelming numbers rather than effective military strategy, contributing to the staggering casualty rate for both sides in this ongoing conflict.
